Beaches In Tamil Nadu

The beauty of the Bay of Bengal can be best viewed and enjoyed from the sandy shores of Tamil Nadu. The southernmost state of India has a very long coast line of 910 km having Bay of Bengal on the east and Indian Ocean on the south. Tamil Nadu possesses the southernmost tip of Peninsular India at Kanyakumari. This state is rich in many tourist destinations be it hill stations or beaches, temples or historic monuments, waterfalls or palaces, wildlife sanctuaries or heritage sites. The cuisine and silk of Tamil Nadu are also known worldwide.
When we think about the beaches in Tamil Nadu, the two main ones which come to our mind are Marina Beach in Chennai and Kanyakumari. But there are also a couple of other lovely beaches which delights our mind.

Marina Beach

The Marina beach one of the most loveliest beaches in India, is located on the eastern side of Chennai nearby the Bay of Bengal. The sunsets and the sunrises at this mesmerizing beach are absolutely awesome. Though bathing and swimming can be dangerous, as the undercurrent is very strong, the beach attracts several visitors, who come to spend their holiday in the laps of natural beauty of coastal region. In the evenings, virtually, the beach becomes a fair ground with various kinds of entertainment and food stalls lining the beach.

Kanyakumari Beach

The KaniyaKumari or Cape Comorin, is the end of the tip of India's land. This famous beach is an marvelous assortment of multi- hued sand. It is surrounded by Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. It is also called 'Thriveni Sangamam', where you can enjoy the breath-taking views of the Sun Shine and the Sun Set on your travel holiday in the region. It is also famous for Gandhi Mandapam and Kanyakumari Amman temple. Amidst the sea of Kanyakumari, a small hillock houses the memorial of Swami Vivekananda.

Mahabalipuram Beach

Situated in the Silk City of Tamil Nadu-Kancheepuram, Mahabalipuram is a world heritage site. Also known as Mamallapuram, this was a port city during the 7th century under the dynasty of Pallavas.

Mahabalipuram beach is adorned by clean shining sand, rocky shore and historic sculptures. This beach is a silent beach away from the fussy crowd which owes a holy ambience. Moreover, the remains of the history gives us a special feel which relaxes your soul. This destination is famous for the historic monuments, panels, sculptures, monolithic rathas (chariots), temples and caves. The rock cut architecture and monolithic sculptures mesmerize you. Most of them are the finest examples of Dravidian and Pallava art but Buddhist style can also be seen here.

Mahabalipuram beach is well connected by road, rail and air. It is 60 km south of Chennai city. Buses ply to this site from Chennai, Pondicherry and Chengalpattu.

RRameswaram Beach
Rameshwaram is a holy destination situated in the Pamban Island which is not in the Indian main land. This beautiful holy island is connected to the mainland by the Pamban Bridge which is India’s first sea bridge and second longest sea bridge. Srilanka is just 18 miles away from Dhanushkodi which is the very tip of this island.
Rameshwaram is surrounded by the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar which is on the very pretty Bay of Bengal. The tranquil sea is very shallow and the beach is un crowded which makes it a perfect beach for swimming and sun bathing. Another main reason to visit this beach is to explore the wide varieties of marine species and coral reefs found here. You can also spot frolicking dolphins in the clear blue water. The golden sandy shore is dotted by varied and beautiful shells which lightens the color of the golden sand to a whitish one.

Rameshwaram is more of a pilgrim center than a beach destination. According to Hindu Mythology, Lord Rama along with Hanuman and his friends constructed a bridge from Dhanushkodi to Mannar Island in Srilanka to rescue his beloved wife Devi Sita. Rameshwaram is well connected by road, rail and air. Nearest airport is Madurai airport which is 173 km away. The holy city has connection through rail to all major cities including Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Trichy.
